Kerry Leigh & Expresso Lane
Contemporary rock/pop with hints of Dire Straits and Chris Rea here and there but with their own 'algorhythms' thrown in that are distinctly Australian.

Meet Kerry Leigh & Expresso Lane

Kerry Leigh & Expresso Lane

Kerry's father was a jazz guitarist who played at the Tivoli and toured all over Australia and New Zealand in big show bands in the 60's. Kerry started learning a variety of instruments in high school tenor/alto sax, trombone & tuba. Playing a little guitar but not really interested in it's sound at this stage until listening to his fathers guitar collection of Bruce Forman, George Benson, Johnny Smith Jazz records He picked up the guitar at the age of 18.

Taking lessons off a local teacher for a year to build up guitar chops and theory, Kerry got accepted in to a music collage after a brief practical test by George Golla and Don Andrews. They accepted him in to The Guitar Academy at Bondi where he stayed for 2 years studying jazz with another good teacher Peter Toohey. Although finding the jazz scene full of knowledge and fun, he soon learnt it was very clicky and more of an elitist club. Kerry also felt this is not where he wanted to stay musically. Exploring more to find a musical environment he felt comfortable in, it wasn't till he got involved in recording studios in the early 80's. He teamed up with others writing jingles and learning how to use the classic vintage recording gear at "Sound Barrier" recording studios at Camperdown. This was a great introductory to the world of pro recording bands like Midnight Oil who passed through the hallways and many others. Always wanting to play in original bands, Kerry joined "Wayne Gillespie and the Gallery" in the mid/ late 80's who had a recording contract with CBS/Sony. Doing supports with Dave Dobbin {Slice of Heaven tour} and appearing on the midday show with Kerri -Anne Kennerley and MTV Kerry was a member for a year till the wheels fell off due to poor management and lack of record company faith in artists.

Now teaching guitar at the Guitar Factory Kerry could afford to pay rent and eat {after being in a band with a record deal.} As far as the teaching goes Kerry realized this was definitely not the road to go down He soon grew bored with it all and decided to explore the studio world again. A lucky break arrived in 1995 when Sun recording Studios {in Sydney} owned by Peter "count" Contini was selling some classic 70's recording equipment MCI jh 400 24 Track Console and a MCI jh 24 Track 2" Multi track. This was used to set up Air-raid recording Studios, built in a actual 1939 bomb shelter at the back of Lindsay's toy museum in Leichhardt. Being pretty much broke, getting loans and taking credit cards to their limit, Kerry with keyboard partner Kate started up a cover duo playing 6 nights a week while also working a day job so he could afford to build Air-raid studios. The studio recorded over 900 bands, some international artist along the way being the likes of Jackson Browne with his son Ryan, also USA singer songwriter Tom T. Hall and many other numerous bands with great talent. Air-raid studios closed in 2000 due to the digital home recording invasion. Kerry also thought 8 years was enough time to be a shop keeper plus the grunge seattle sound was everywhere. Kerry noticed the lack of pride and playing skills in the new bands coming up just wanting to immolate a trend for a record company or be a fashion statement so it was a good time to get out. With less distractions now of running a business being at home he used this time to write and record his own material. The first album "Kerry Leigh & Expresso lane walking through walls" was finished 2005 with the help from his keyboard partner Kate Leigh and a lot of other helpful friends.

The album was tracked by Kerry Leigh, mixed and produced by John Sayers, who has a track record of mixing hit songs for bands such as Mondo Rock, Russell Morris, Sherbet, Mi-Sex, Australian crawl, Troy Casser Daley, Olivier Newton john.
