Album Bio:

Sturgeon has arisen from the depths of the murky waters to cast away any notion that hard rockin' metal cannot part with its 4/4 rhythmic roots. Their first album, The Darker Sequence, is plastered with all kinds of odd timing signatures and non-traditional tunings. Listen to "Mantis" and "Darker" and you'll get the idea.

The back bone of this fish is Gerry Porter on drums and Paul Jones on bass, who execute their sonic boom fiercely, loudly and intelligently. One need only listen to "While You're Wasted" and "Neverdone" to know they're securely holding down the fort. Kent Brisley and Chris Wieber cast their guitars into the Sea of Music and reel in a plethora of finely tuned harmonic tune-ahs. At the helm of this fishing boat is Randy Reeman, constantly exhorting his vocals to rip through the speakers of your stereo and demand attention. The Darker Sequence has a fine balance of grooving catchy licks interspersed with exotic and sometimes surreal guitar solos. The vocals are loud and appropriately smooth when necessary. This guitar heavy record is the kind of caviar that most metal enthusiasts dream about.

There is a certain quality to Sturgeon's writing style that separates them from the rest of the fish in the sea. In a world where it seems impossible to be unique anymore, Sturgeon appear to be breaking that boundary with The Darker Sequence. They are an eclectic bunch with an eclectic taste in music and an affinity for art. You can hear it and feel it in their music.

Be prepared to challenge your hearing senses and open your mind to the possibilities of what this album may do to your cerebral cortex. The Darker Sequence boasts 10 songs, one of which, "Neverdone," is a fantastic instrumental showcasing the talents of these fine musicians. The title itself suggests that the members of Sturgeon are constantly challenging themselves and are, in essence, never done tapping into their creative minds and releasing their musical ambitions upon the Sea.
